The Energy Transition Challenge Fund (ETCF) Programme has opened a call for grant applications targeted at Nigerian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The programme is designed to support Nigeria’s energy transition agenda by enabling businesses to adopt cleaner, more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

Aim

The ETCF Programme aims to expand access to modern, reliable, and affordable energy for households while reducing dependence on traditional and polluting fuels.

It also seeks to accelerate energy transition across commercial, industrial, and agribusiness value chains by supporting cost-effective and environmentally responsible energy investments.

In addition, public institutions—including technical and vocational education and training centres—are supported through access to energy solutions and skills development initiatives.

Funding details

The programme will run for four years and offers grant funding ranging from approximately USD 105,000 to USD 860,000 per grantee.

Funds are disbursed in tranches tied to project milestones, with the first tranche capped at 30% of the total grant value.

Grants must be used for clearly defined projects, such as launching new energy services, scaling existing solutions, or expanding into new markets.

Who can apply

The grant is open to eligible Nigerian businesses that meet specific operational and compliance requirements.

Eligible applicants include:

  • For-profit companies legally registered and physically operating in Nigeria.

  • SMEs with a minimum of two years of accounting records.

  • Companies able to provide audited financial statements.

  • Businesses willing to provide matching contributions at the required ratios.

  • Firms compliant with tax, labour, human rights and environmental regulations.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must not have received funding for the same project within the past six months.
  • Companies involved in corruption, illegal activities, or prohibited business practices are not eligible to apply.
  • Full compliance with national laws, regulatory frameworks and ethical standards is mandatory throughout the grant period.
