Nigerian Navy begins Batch 38 intake—Here’s what you need to know

Registration for the Batch 38 recruitment exercise of the Nigerian Navy officially started yesterday, October 2. 

Below is a quick-and-dirty guide on everything you need to know about eligibility and requirements as well as what to expect during assessment. 

Who can apply?

The recruitment exercise is open to Nigerians citizens with a valid National Identification Number (NIN)

Is there an age limit?

Interested applicants should be between 18 and 22 years old by 31 December 2025, and should have a minimum of any of the following: SSCE, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB.

Candidates with NCE, OND, registered nurse/midwife qualifications, or those applying as drivers/mechanics and sports personnel, shouldn’t be older than 26 years.

Can I apply if married?

No, all applicants must be single at the time of application and during training.

Is there a timeline for academic qualifications?

School certificates that are older than six years as of the time of application will not be accepted. However, candidates are allowed to apply with pending results.

How long will the registration last?

The application for the Batch 38 recruitment closes on 31st October 2025. A nationwide aptitude test will be held on 29th November 2025.

Can I apply if I have tattoos or body marks?

No, tattoos, inscriptions, and multiple piercings will be automatic grounds for disqualification. Additionally, interested applicants must ensure they have no prior criminal conviction by a court of law.

Am I required to submit a medical fitness certificate during registration?

No, you don’t. However, you should be in good health. Candidates with medical conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, sickle cell disease, knock knees, flat feet, and poor eyes may risk being disqualified.  

How long will training last?

The Nigerian Navy Basic Training School training lasts between 6 and 9 months. Along with theory lessons, training involves physical drill, swimming and seamanship.

What’s the aptitude test based on?

The test typically covers English, basic mathematics, and General Knowledge to assess your understanding of natural phenomena and recent events. Studying past questions will give you an  edge.

Will recruits be paid during training?

Yes, recruits will receive a stipend during the course of training. Afterwards, they will be absorbed on the Navy salary scale as Ordinary Seamen with prospects for advancement.

Can I apply for all categories as a woman?

Yes, women can apply, provided they meet the basic requirements. Some combat-related categories, however, may have limited slots for female candidates.

  • Weapon electrical systems – open to electrical/electronic experts. 
  • Communications & IT – ICT activities as well as digital activities.
  • Seaman & survey – For navigation and hydrographic survey roles.
  • Medical Services – For qualified nurses, medics, and health professionals.
