The Knight Science Journalism Programme at MIT is inviting science reporters from around the world to apply for its year-long fellowship. Designed to deepen journalists’ understanding of science and technology, the fellowship helps participants sharpen their reporting skills and pursue a focused area of interest while engaging with leading research institutions across Cambridge and Boston.

Programme structure

The programme combines structured learning with self-directed exploration. Fellows take part in seminars led by top researchers and media experts, gaining insights into emerging scientific fields and debates.

Field trips to institutions such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Jackson Laboratory provide direct exposure to cutting-edge research, helping journalists connect academic science to real-world applications.

Training and Experience

Skill-based workshops give fellows practical training in mobile video production, photography, digital editing, data journalism and podcasting. Participants may also audit courses at MIT, Harvard and other nearby universities, allowing them to build a personalised academic path that includes at least one science course per semester.

Community events, social gatherings and cohort activities further enrich the experience and foster lasting professional relationships.

Funding details

Each fellow is awarded an $85,000 stipend over 9.5 months, along with a travel and housing allowance and basic health insurance for themselves and their families. This support ensures that journalists can fully participate in the programme without financial pressure.

Applicants must be experienced, full-time journalists who report on science or related fields. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Compliance with programme rules on AI use in application materials.

Programme responsibilities

Selected fellows must reside full-time in Boston or Cambridge for the academic year. Outside paid work is prohibited unless specifically approved by the programme, ensuring participants remain fully engaged.
