The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) has opened applications for the Kim Wall Memorial Fund 2025, established in honour of the late journalist Kim Wall and her dogged commitment to telling human-interest stories.

Overview

The Kim Wall Memorial Fund empowers women and nonbinary journalists to pursue reporting projects that go beyond traditional headlines.

It supports in-depth storytelling that explores diverse cultures, subcultures and social issues often overlooked in mainstream media.

Funding

Grants of up to $5,000 are available to cover reporting expenses such as travel, logistics, visa fees, insurance, stipends and translation services.

The funding is designed to help journalists complete impactful stories without financial barriers.

While the grant does not fund equipment or academic research, applicants may include fair compensation for collaborators such as photographers or producers.

Eligibility

The fund is open to women and nonbinary journalists from any country who:

● Have at least one year of professional journalism experience
● Work in print, broadcast, or digital media
● Can publish in any language (with strong English proficiency required)
● Submit individual applications, even if planning to collaborate with others

Requirements

Applicants must submit a clear and original proposal outlining the story idea, its global or social relevance and how it reflects Kim Wall’s journalistic spirit.

The proposal should include a budget plan detailing how the funds will be used and a realistic timeline for completing the project.

Submissions should demonstrate creativity, feasibility and a strong sense of purpose in uncovering untold stories.

Review process

The IWMF will evaluate applications in January and February 2026, focusing on originality, impact potential, and storytelling quality.

Successful applicants will be notified by mid-March 2026, with the final list of grantees announced publicly on March 23, 2026—Kim Wall’s birthday, honouring her legacy of fearless reporting.

Deadline

The application’s closing date is December 7, 2025. Visit the IWMF website to apply.
