Applications are now open for the Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship, a six-month programme beamed at early- to mid-career editors, writers, researchers, and journalists across Africa.

Organised by The Republic, a pan-African publication, the fellowship empowers participants to shape powerful narratives rooted in Black identity and the diverse realities of the African experience.

The programme will select five fellows, one from each of Africa’s main regions: West, East, Southern, North, and Central Africa.

Fellowship Overview

Fellows will receive training in curating and crafting stories centred on Blackness and the African experience. The programme offers a unique professional development opportunity for storytellers passionate about reshaping how Africa is understood and represented.

Responsibilities

Fellows are expected to:

  • Submit proposals aligned with one of The Republic’s eight core focus areas (e.g., Art and Culture, Science and Technology, or Politics and Security).

  • Develop a distinctive editorial identity and narrative voice that reflects their region.

  • Commission two original essays per month from contributing writers.

  • Produce one original piece of writing each month.

  • Organise one public engagement event in their home city at the end of the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be based in Africa and represent one of the five continental regions.

  • Have at least three years of professional experience in editing, journalism, research, or content curation.

  • Demonstrate a strong passion for storytelling, Black identity, and the complexities of the African experience.

Fellowship Benefits

  • A monthly stipend of $500 USD.

  • Ongoing editorial guidance and mentorship from The Republic’s experienced editorial team.
