The IJURR Foundation is now accepting applications for its Writing-Up Grants, which support postgraduate researchers advancing knowledge in urban and regional studies.
Aim
The grants support research that goes beyond technical problem-solving to examine urban issues within their broader historical, cultural and political contexts.
The foundation encourages projects that critique policy, investigate the unintended consequences of urban governance and deepen insights into urban inequality.
While the programme primarily welcomes social scientists such as geographers, sociologists, and economists, it is also open to related fields including law, history and anthropology.
Available funding
Each grant provides up to $6,000 USD to assist doctoral candidates with essential expenses during the final stages of writing.
Eligible costs include university fees, accommodation and equipment required to complete the dissertation. In exceptional cases of hardship, trustees may approve a higher award; however, grant extensions are not available. Students must secure any additional funding needed to complete their studies.
Who can apply
Applicants must:
-
Be a PhD researcher in urban or regional studies.
-
Come from a low- or middle-income country (World Bank classification).
-
Have completed fieldwork and begun writing.
-
Provide evidence of university registration during the award period.
-
Have an expected submission date, ideally within six months.
-
Preferably have completed their first degree in a low- or middle-income country.
-
Not have previously received an IJURR Foundation studentship.
Programme expectations
Grants may be held in any academic department offering appropriate supervision. Successful applicants must maintain active university registration, ensuring steady progress throughout the writing-up period.
The Foundation prioritises research that enriches public debates on urban development and enhances understanding of structural processes shaping cities.
Requirements
Candidates must submit a completed application form, proof of PhD registration, and two academic references confirming their progress and readiness for the writing-up stage.
Clear documentation of dissertation status and timelines is essential, as the award specifically supports researchers nearing completion—not early-stage PhD candidates.
Deadline
Interested candidates should visit the foundation’s website to fill in the form. Applications close on January 31, 2026.
