Global Mental Health Award opens for nominations with up to £8M in funding

Nominations are now open for a global award recognising individuals and organisations making outstanding contributions to mental health and well-being.

The Mental Health Award celebrates visionary leaders, advocates, researchers, and service providers whose innovative work is transforming lives through mental health programmes, public awareness campaigns, policy reform, and community-based support. It aims to spotlight efforts that reduce stigma, expand access to care, and uplift vulnerable populations around the world.

Eligible nominees include mental health professionals, researchers, non-profit organisations, media practitioners, educators, and grassroots leaders from diverse fields who are driving meaningful change in the mental health space.

Funding information

The award includes a two-phase funding opportunity for selected research teams:

1. Foundation Phase

Selected teams will receive £200,000 over 12 months to build their teams and develop a detailed proposal for a definitive effectiveness study. Projects must focus on psychological and/or social interventions and include implementation and scale-up strategies.

Research must be conducted in either the UK or a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) and include outcomes that are meaningful to people with lived experience, as well as a full economic evaluation.

2. Impact Phase

Teams that complete the Foundation Phase will be invited to apply for the Impact Phase, with awards ranging from £5 million to £8 million over a period of up to five years. Final funding limits will be confirmed during the Foundation Phase.

Eligibility criteria

  • Nominations are welcome from any discipline relevant to mental health science.

  • Applicants must be affiliated with eligible organisations worldwide, excluding mainland China.
