The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) has officially announced its 2026 call for proposals to boost renewable energy development across the developing world.

This initiative focuses on driving private sector development to improve both energy production and access in low- and middle-income countries.

By fostering sustainable economic growth through increased renewable energy generation, Norad aims to address a critical infrastructure barrier for many developing economies.

The renewable energy grants program is designed to create long-term impact by partnering with innovative enterprises ready to expand green energy footprints.

Funding and benefits

Grants provided under this scheme are specifically intended to reduce financial risk for companies before they reach final investment decisions.

This strategic support helps bridge the gap for projects that might otherwise be considered too high-risk for traditional private investment alone.

The funding scope is broad, covering project development studies, vital grid connection infrastructure, or subsidies for long-term debt-financing guarantee premiums.

This variety of support ensures that projects at various stages of maturity can find relevant assistance.

Selected applicants can receive up to 50% of incurred project costs, providing a significant boost to a venture’s capital efficiency.

However, prospective partners should note that grants are disbursed in arrears, requiring the applicant to finance activities upfront.

Application requirements and eligibility

The competitive process is open to any Norwegian or international applicant that meets Norad’s specific grant scheme rules and minimum criteria.

Evaluation is based on how each proposal fits within the call’s overall portfolio and its potential for sustainable impact.

Candidates must first navigate “Stage 1,” which requires the submission of a short concept note and audited financial accounts from 2024 or 2025.

This initial phase ensures that only the most viable and financially stable organizations proceed to the next round.

Successful “Stage 1” participants will be invited to “Stage 2” to submit full applications for a chance to be among the 10 to 20 new agreements funded this cycle.

All materials must be submitted in English through the official Norad Grants Portal to be considered.

Deadline

All interested parties must complete their submissions and provide all required documentation by the final deadline of March 24, 2026.

Late or incomplete applications will not be processed, as the selection committee begins its weighted evaluation immediately following the cutoff.
