The Emerging Researcher Award (ERA) programme has launched a new pilot grant initiative aimed at revitalising research on Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. The programme seeks to attract new talent and innovative ideas that can push the boundaries of existing CMT research.

Its core objective is to encourage exploration of novel concepts and generate meaningful preliminary data that can serve as a foundation for larger, future studies on CMT.

Priority areas

Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that directly address major challenges or critical gaps in CMT drug development. Proposals must align with one of the programme’s defined priority areas, which include:

  • Improving drug delivery to the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  • Identifying new therapeutics or drug targets

  • Translating laboratory findings into clinical applications

Other innovative projects may also be considered if they demonstrate strong potential to advance CMT drug development.

Funding details

Successful applicants will receive up to $75,000 for a one-year project period. Projects that show promising results may become eligible for follow-on funding in the future.

Key funding details include:

  • Salary support capped at 50% of the total request.

  • Up to $1,500 may be budgeted for travel, particularly to attend a future Global CMT Research Convention.

  • Indirect costs must be justified and cannot exceed 10% of the total budget.

Eligibility

The grant is open to researchers across academic, non-profit and industry settings worldwide. Collaborative projects between academia and industry are encouraged but not required.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) earned within the past ten years.

  • For postdoctoral researchers, include a letter of support from a principal investigator or mentor.

  • Demonstrate readiness to lead independent research or operate a laboratory by September 2026.

Application details

The ERA pilot grants specifically support ideas that are fresh, unexplored, and unfunded within the CMT field. For early-career investigators, demonstrating the potential to transition to an independent research role is essential.

Interested applicants can visit the CMT Research Foundation website to apply before November 15, 2025.
