The European National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) has launched a call for proposals to support seven new cultural relations projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The initiative, titled Spaces of Culture, is a new programme tailored specifically for the Sub-Saharan African region and is inspired by the European Spaces of Culture programme. It focuses on fostering collaboration, dialogue, and mutual learning between European and African partners.

Spaces of Culture forms part of the broader Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture programme, spearheaded by the European Commission. The initiative aims to deepen cooperation between African and European artists, creators, and cultural professionals.

This call for proposals seeks to expand the range of local organisations engaging with European counterparts in the region. It also encourages participation from EUNIC members who wish to strengthen their collaboration in countries where EU member state or EUNIC cluster presence is limited.

Funding

Applicants can apply for grants of up to EUR 50,000. A minimum co-funding of 5% of the requested grant amount is required from project partners or third parties (excluding EU Delegations). For example, a grant request of EUR 50,000 must include at least EUR 2,500 in co-funding.

Successful applicants will receive 80% of the awarded grant as a pre-payment, with the remaining 20% disbursed upon project completion.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Projects must involve at least three full EUNIC members, with exceptions made for countries where EUNIC presence is limited.

  • Proposals must include at least three key local cultural and/or civil society partners.

  • Involvement of EU Delegation(s) in the respective countries is required.

  • Projects should align with the principles of cultural relations, moving beyond mere promotion of European culture to include mutual learning, dialogue, co-creation, and shared capacity building.

  • Relevance to local context

  • Innovation

  • Structure and quality of partnerships

  • Anticipated impact

  • Alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
