The Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellowship Program is now open for applications from early- and mid-career researchers committed to improving how children and youth learn and develop.
This research fellowship targets research that deepens understanding of learning variability, strengthens the translation of evidence into practice, and supports the creation of scalable education solutions.
It encourages interdisciplinary projects that draw from psychology, education sciences, sociology, linguistics, neuroscience, economics, behavioral science, and related fields.
The research fellowship program especially welcomes scholars prepared to integrate multiple levels of analysis and collaborate across disciplines.
Funding and Benefits
Selected fellows receive $204,770 or 165,000 Swiss Francs over three years, with up to 10 percent available for institutional overhead.
The funding can cover up to half of the fellow’s salary and support diverse research needs, from hiring assistants to acquiring equipment and undertaking professional travel.
Fellows may also apply for additional funding at the end of their term to expand work connected to evidence-to-action or capacity-building activities.
Beyond financial support, fellows gain access to a global research network, alumni activities, platforms for sharing findings, and opportunities for both scientific and personal development.
Who can apply?
The program is open to researchers who meet the following criteria:
- Earned a PhD or equivalent degree within the past 10 years
- Employed at a higher education or research institution
- Conduct research aligned with early learning, development, or learning variability
- Demonstrate strong research quality, creativity, and methodological rigor
- Show readiness to collaborate across the Jacobs CIFAR network
- Commit to participating actively in foundation events and communication efforts
Application requirements
Applicants must complete a three-stage process.
The first stage evaluates alignment with the Foundation’s goals and network fit.
Shortlisted candidates then submit an extended research proposal outlining objectives, methodology, and expected impact.
Finalists participate in an interview to discuss their motivations and clarify research plans.
All materials are reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel, and interview-stage applicants receive feedback.
