The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (EMKP) is inviting applications for grants aimed at documenting and safeguarding living material knowledge systems that are at risk of disappearing.
EMKP seeks projects that capture knowledge still practiced today but facing decline.
Food-related projects are eligible only if they focus on the tools, objects, or practices involved in preparation, sharing, or consumption, not food production itself.
The initiative emphasizes ethical, thorough documentation that preserves cultural heritage for communities and future generations.
Funding for and benefits of the material knowledge program
Applicants can choose between two types of grants: small grants of up to $24,000 for projects lasting up to one year and large grants of up to $120,000 for projects extending over two years.
Both types are designed to provide enough support for careful research, fieldwork, and proper recording of material knowledge.
Receiving an EMKP grant offers not only financial support but also the opportunity to collaborate with experts, access resources, and gain recognition for preserving endangered knowledge.
Who can apply?
- Applicants must operate under a principal applicant and co-applicant model.
- The principal applicant leads the project, while co-applicants contribute expertise and share responsibility.
- Research assistants may support the project but cannot manage it.
- Applicants currently leading another EMKP grant cannot apply, although co-applicants with active projects may if their reporting is up to date.
Application requirements
- At least one applicant must be affiliated with a suitable host institution (university, NGO, museum, or archive) that handles administrative and financial responsibilities.
- Student principal applicants must include a letter of support from their academic supervisor.
- There is no nationality restrictions for applicants.
