Call for proposals: EU-funded grants to combat torture and ill-treatment

Are you an activist or a civil society organisation with an initiative focused on preventing torture and ill-treatment? Submit your proposal for the United Against Torture project.

Supported by the European Union, the United Against Torture project, which is an initiative of the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), welcomes proposals from civil society organisations (CSOs) working to prevent torture and other forms of mistreatment through strengthening oversight and specific safeguards for persons deprived of liberty.

The duration will depend on the scope of the activity proposed, up to a maximum of six months. All work must be completed by 31 March 2026.

Priority Areas

1. Increasing and strengthening oversight of deprivation of liberty

2. Advancing legal and procedural safeguards for persons deprived of liberty

Funding Information

Grants range from €5,000 to €25,000 per proposal.

Organisations must not exceed a total of €75,000 in funding received from the United Against Torture Consortium during the 2023–2026 project period.

Eligibility Criteria

This call is open to not-for-profit civil society groups, associations, organisations and coalitions operating independently and without undue governmental interference  in any of the following countries:

Africa: Benin, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Senegal, South Africa or Togo

Asia-Pacific: Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Thailand or Vanuatu

Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay or Uruguay

The United Against Torture project, funded by the European Union and led by the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), seeks proposals from civil society organizations aiming to prevent torture and ill-treatment. This initiative focuses on increasing oversight and enhancing legal safeguards for individuals deprived of liberty. Proposals can run for up to six months and must be completed by March 31, 2026.

Grants range from €5,000 to €25,000, with a funding cap of €75,000 per organization from the United Against Torture Consortium during 2023–2026. Eligible entities include independent, not-for-profit civil society groups from select countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Each organization may submit only one application.
