The International News Media Association (INMA), in partnership with the Wits Centre for Journalism and with funding from the Google News Initiative, is seeking applicants for the Africa Emerging Leaders Initiative.

This six-month, fully-funded programme is designed to cultivate the next generation of news media leaders across the continent.

The initiative focuses specifically on the business aspects of news, aiming to equip participants with the essential skills needed for innovation and navigating the industry’s changing landscape.

Structure of the Africa Emerging Leaders Initiative

Successful candidates will participate in a hybrid programme that includes online sessions and two immersive, in-person trips to Lagos, Nigeria, and Nairobi, Kenya.

The initiative is fully funded, covering all costs for tuition, travel, accommodation, and meals for the participants. Beyond the financial support, leaders will gain practical skills, receive mentorship from industry experts, expand their professional networks, and develop a strategic project to implement within their own companies.

Who can apply for the Africa Emerging Leaders Initiative

To be considered for this leadership programme, applicants must meet several specific criteria.

The programme is looking for individuals who are ready to take their leadership skills to the next level and drive change in the African media sector.

  • Applicants must be citizens of an African country and currently reside in Africa.
  • They must work for a news media company that operates in Africa.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in the news media industry is required.
  • Candidates should be in a leadership role with decision-making authority and have direct reports.
  • A strong command of the English language is necessary to participate fully.

How to apply

Prospective applicants for the Africa Emerging Leaders Initiative are required to demonstrate their eligibility and commitment to the programme’s intensive six-month schedule.

A crucial part of the application is securing support from their employer, as participants will need to be available for both the online components and the in-person travel modules.

Deadline

The deadline to apply is October 3, 2025, and class participants will be announced on December 4, 2025. Visit the INMA website to apply.
