The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched an urgent call for expression of interest to address the growing burden of acute malnutrition in Borno State, Nigeria.

This initiative, part of the 2026 Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme (TSFP), seeks to partner with organizations to deliver life-saving nutritional support to the region’s most vulnerable populations.

The scale of the crisis is immense, with projections suggesting nearly 5.44 million children under five in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria will suffer from acute malnutrition through April 2025.

Additionally, approximately 787,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls (PBWGs) are expected to require immediate nutrition interventions to prevent further deterioration of their health.

Under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2027), the WFP aims to stabilize and rehabilitate the nutritional status of those suffering from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM).

The program utilizes both health facility-level supplementation and community-level approaches, such as the “Tom Brown” model, to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Funding and benefits

Selected partners will operate under a Field Level Agreement (FLA) spanning from March 1 to December 31, 2026.

This partnership provides organizations with the platform to manage large-scale nutrition programs while leveraging the WFP’s established global resources and expertise.

The program also emphasizes capacity strengthening, offering partners the opportunity to help transition ownership of nutrition activities to local government and community structures.

This includes the implementation of Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) to deliver integrated management of acute malnutrition effectively.

Furthermore, WFP provides a standardized framework for the intervention, including specific budget structures and environmental risk screening templates.

This ensures that all projects are aligned with international humanitarian standards while maximizing the impact of every resource spent.

Application requirements and eligibility

The WFP is scouting for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that maintain a strong operational presence in the field within Borno State.

Applicants must demonstrate significant sector expertise in nutrition, particularly in emergency contexts and malnutrition prevention.

The selection process is rigorous, with heavy weighting placed on a partner’s past experience with UN agencies and their ability to show complementarity with other humanitarian interventions.

Organizations must also prove cost-effectiveness, as the budget proposal must illustrate clear linkages between activities and results.

A critical eligibility factor is the organization’s ability to provide a resource contribution, which is weighted at 10% of the selection criteria.

Interested parties must submit a narrative proposal, a budget proposal, and a detailed work plan within a single zip folder to be considered.

Deadline

The window for submissions is brief, with the final application deadline set for January 30, 2026. To assist potential partners, the WFP will host a virtual information session on Monday, January 26, 2026, at 2 PM to clarify project requirements.
