The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship is a specialised journalism programme designed to support reporters producing in-depth, evidence-based stories on biodiversity conservation and environmental issues.

The fellowship enables journalists to dedicate sustained time to reporting on complex environmental challenges that are often underreported or insufficiently explored.

 Aim

This fellowship targets journalists committed to covering conservation, ecosystems and the human–environment relationship.

It supports reporting that brings visibility to overlooked environmental issues, highlights local and global conservation efforts, and explains the social, ecological and policy dimensions of environmental change.

Funding details

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $500 USD, totalling $3,000 USD over the six-month programme.

This financial support allows journalists to focus on research, field reporting, and storytelling without the burden of unpaid labour.

In addition to funding, fellows benefit from professional editing, editorial mentorship and global visibility through publication on an established environmental journalism platform.

Who can participate

The programme is open to journalists with a demonstrated interest in environmental and conservation reporting, particularly those seeking to deepen their skills and produce high-impact stories.

Applicants should show a commitment to ethical journalism, intellectual curiosity about environmental issues, and the ability to work independently while responding to editorial guidance.

Programme structure

Participants are expected to dedicate approximately 10 hours per week to the fellowship.

Over the six-month period, fellows typically produce one in-depth story per month, resulting in six published articles.

All stories are published on Mongabay’s platform, reaching a global audience interested in environmental and conservation reporting.

Deadline

Interested journalists should apply via the Mongabay website. The closing date is February 1, 2026.
