Harvard University’s Houghton Library Visiting Fellowship Programme is now open for applications, offering scholars at all career stages the chance to conduct in-depth research using the library’s world-renowned collections.

Focus

The programme supports projects that reinterpret Houghton’s holdings through global, contemporary, and interdisciplinary perspectives. It encourages research engaging with pressing social, political and cultural themes.

Recent fellowships have spotlighted under-represented narratives, with initiatives exploring gender, sexuality and early modern Black lives, underscoring the library’s commitment to inclusivity and innovative scholarship.

Funding

Each fellow receives a $4,500 stipend for a four-week residency at Harvard.

While fellows cover their own travel, accommodation and taxes, they benefit from full access to Houghton’s collections, research guidance, and integration into Harvard’s scholarly ecosystem—often leading to long-term collaborations and academic publications.

Eligibility

The fellowship is open to:

  • Doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers

  • Academics and independent scholars

  • Professionals from libraries, archives and museums worldwide

Non-U.S. citizens must obtain a J-1 visa, which Harvard can sponsor (visa fees are the applicant’s responsibility). Fellows typically must not live within commuting distance of Houghton Library.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • A 500-word project proposal clearly referencing Houghton Library holdings

  • A preliminary list of relevant collection materials

  • A curriculum vitae

  • One letter of reference

Previous fellows may reapply only after a five-year interval. Projects lacking direct engagement with Houghton’s collections will not be considered.

Review process

A selection committee reviews applications and matches awardees with the most fitting fellowship—no need to apply for a specific one. Successful applicants receive their stipend 2–3 weeks after arrival.

Application deadline: January 16, 2026. Visit the Harvard Library website to apply.
