Leonardo and Telespazio have opened the seventh edition of #T-TeC 2026, an international open innovation contest designed to transform the space sector.
The competition invites the world’s brightest young minds to propose breakthrough solutions for space exploration and sustainability.
This year’s technological focus spans critical areas including extra-terrestrial exploitation, in-orbit servicing, and the protection of space and ground infrastructures.
Researchers are also encouraged to submit innovations in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), as well as emerging space-based connectivity solutions.
Funding and benefits
Cash prizes are awarded across two categories, with conceptual projects in the “Idea” track eligible for €5,000 and advanced “Prototypes” (above TRL 4) competing for a top prize of €10,000.
The second and third-place prototype winners will receive €6,000 and €4,000, respectively.
Beyond cash, top teams can access pre-incubation programs at the Thales Alenia Space “Space Business Catalyst” or various ESA Business Incubation Centres across Italy for up to six months.
These opportunities are granted at the discretion of the committee to help teams turn their research into viable ventures.
Leonardo will also grant one high-potential proposal a dedicated testing contract to support a six-month “Proof of Concept” phase.
This award is specifically designed for valuable proposals that require further development but do not yet have an obligation to establish a startup.
Application requirements and eligibility
The contest is open to university students, PhD candidates, and young researchers globally who can participate either individually or as collaborative teams from different departments.
No formal proof of enrollment is required; a simple declaration of status from the team members is sufficient.
Applicants must ensure their projects are not already involved in similar ongoing incubation activities at national or international levels.
While not mandatory, the organizers highly recommend that teams have a professor serving as a mentor for their submission.
Deadline
The final delivery deadline for all proposals is February 20, 2026, followed by a dedicated evaluation period throughout the month of March.
The winning visionaries will be honored during an official award ceremony scheduled for April 2026.
