The Africa Institute in Sharjah has launched its 2026 open call for the Global Africa Translation Fellowship.
This initiative, part of the African Languages and Translation Program, aims to make critical African studies texts accessible to a global audience.
A key feature of the program is its non-residential nature, allowing fellows to complete their work from anywhere in the world.
The Global Africa Translation Fellowship aims to bridge language barriers by supporting the translation of significant works into English, Arabic, or other languages.
Funding and benefits
Recipients can receive a grant ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, determined by the scope and quality of the proposed translation.
These funds are intended to support projects involving previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or critical theory.
The funding supports the translation of various genres from the African continent and its diaspora into widely accessible formats.
Eligible projects can be either newly conceived works or existing works-in-progress that are feasible for completion.
To assist with project costs, funds are disbursed in two installments, starting at the beginning of the project and concluding upon its final delivery.
Recipients are required to submit a copy of the finished work for archival purposes.
Application requirements and eligibility
The Global Africa Translation Fellowship is specifically tailored for applicants from the Global South who can demonstrate a strong capacity for high-quality translation.
Selection is based on the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s prior publication record.
Candidates must provide a two-page CV, a summary justifying the importance of the work, and a four-to-five-page sample of their translation. All materials must be submitted through the institute’s official online platform.
If the chosen work is not in the public domain, applicants must also include a letter from the copyright holder confirming availability.
Technical enquiries regarding the submission process should be directed to the grants administration team via email.
Deadline
The 2026 enrollment cycle is strictly time-bound, with all digital applications due by the final deadline of Thursday, March 12, 2026.
Prospective fellows are encouraged to submit early to ensure all attachments meet the technical size requirements.
