The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) is inviting applications for its Master’s programme. Successful graduate students will get access to top-tier research resources, including a network of experts, at the UNU-WIDER headquarters in Helsinki, Finland.

Aims and benefits

The programme aims to help students complete their master’s thesis on a topic related to development economics. Successful applicants receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1,850 to cover living expenses in Helsinki, as well as a travel grant to cover the costs of a return trip from their home country and a medical insurance through their stay.

Who can apply

Although the programme is open to all nationalities, the selection committee encourages applications from students in developing countries who:

  • Are enrolled in a master’s degree programme in Development Economics or a related social science.
  • Are in the final stages of their degree.
  • Are proficient in both written and spoken English.

Application process

Candidates who meet the requirements should submit a complete application package—that is, an updated CV, a detailed thesis proposal and a letter of recommendation from their supervisor—through the online portal. Click here to access the portal.

Submissions should showcase the applicant’s research potential as well as the relevance of their thesis topic to UNU-WIDER’s work.

Deadline

All applications are due on September 30, 2025.
