The University of Glasgow has officially opened applications for the James McCune Smith Scholarships 2026, an initiative designed to empower Black researchers.
These scholarships provide a pathway for students to undertake PhD research in any discipline where the university can provide expert supervision.
The program at the University of Glasgow aims to foster a vibrant, diverse academic community. By removing financial barriers, the university seeks to ensure that talented Black scholars can contribute to global knowledge across all fields of study.
A total of 12 scholarships are available for the upcoming cycle, representing a significant investment in the next generation of academic leaders. Beyond academic research at the University of Glasgow, the program is structured to offer an enhanced experience through professional development and networking.
Funding and benefits
Recipients of the scholarship will receive a comprehensive financial package that covers full tuition fees and a generous stipend for up to four years.
For 2025 entry, the stipend is estimated at £19,795, providing scholars with the financial stability needed to focus on their research.
Additionally, each scholar is awarded a training grant of £3,000 per year to support their professional growth.
This funding is paired with specialized leadership training and community-building activities to help fellows excel within and beyond the university.

Scholars further benefit from mentorship from outside academia, providing them with a broader perspective and a diverse professional network.
