The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) is inviting applications for the 2026 edition of the Chief S.L. Edu Ph.D. Research Grant.
This grant supports research in natural sciences, social sciences, environmental law and related disciplines aimed at promoting sustainable natural resource management in Nigeria.
It focuses on key areas such as habitat restoration, resource management, climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.
Aim of the Grant
The Chief S.L. Edu Ph.D. Research Grant seeks to recognise and reward scholarly contributions that advance sustainable development in Nigeria.
It aims to empower Nigerian scholars whose research addresses critical environmental and sustainability challenges. By supporting innovative Ph.D. projects, the grant encourages evidence-based solutions for ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.
Funding
Successful applicants will receive financial support to cover fieldwork, data collection and analysis expenses.
Awardees will also gain national recognition as NCF Research Fellows and have opportunities to publish their findings on NCF-supported platforms. Additionally, recipients will have access to NCF’s professional network of conservation experts and partner organisations.
Who can apply

Nigerian citizens currently enrolled in a Ph.D. programme at a recognised Nigerian university.

Candidates whose research focuses on environmental conservation, biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem restoration or sustainable development.

Applicants who have completed coursework and defended their research proposal before applying.

Individuals with a strong academic record and demonstrated research potential.

Requirements
Applicants must submit the following documents:

A 3,000-word project proposal detailing the title, problem statement, objectives, methodology and expected outputs.

A 200-word justification explaining how the project supports biodiversity conservation or environmental management.

A progress report from the Ph.D. supervisor (on official letterhead) confirming the research status and significance.

A two-page CV highlighting relevant research experience.

A scanned copy of the admission letter confirming PhD enrollment.
Deadline
Interested candidates should complete their applications through the NCF website. Submissions are due on December 9, 2025.
