The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has opened applications for its annual Climate & Energy Prize, a global competition designed to accelerate innovative solutions driving the world toward a net-zero future.
The programme supports student entrepreneurs tackling critical climate and energy challenges through technology, business and social innovation.
Focus
The competition seeks ventures working in clean energy, carbon reduction, sustainable agriculture, circular economy systems and climate adaptation.
Its goal is to help participants transform high-impact ideas into viable businesses that address both environmental and economic needs on a global scale.
Funding details
Winners of the Climate & Energy Prize will share more than $100,000 in funding. Additionally, participating teams will receive tailored mentorship from MIT faculty, industry experts and investors.
They will also gain access to specialised workshops, business development sessions, and networking opportunities that connect them with potential collaborators and funders.
Application process
Applicants progress through regional semi-finals held across the United States, Europe, and Asia before competing in the global finals at MIT in Boston.
Each stage is designed to help refine their concepts, strengthen technical and business strategies, and prepare teams to pitch to investors with confidence and credibility.
Eligibility criteria
The Climate & Energy Prize is open to student-led ventures that meet the following criteria:
● At least 50% of the team members must be students.
● Student founders must hold a minimum of 50% equity or voting rights for for-profit ventures.
● Non-profit ventures must have student members controlling at least 50% of board voting authority.
● Projects must be new ventures, not extensions of existing businesses.
● Teams do not need to be incorporated at the time of application but must register before receiving funds.
