NGIF Accelerator has launched its latest “Global Gas Innovation Call,” a $2 million competition designed to fast-track next-generation clean technologies for Canada’s natural gas industry.
The program targets high-impact projects capable of reducing emissions and boosting the operational efficiency of the entire gas value chain, from production to end-use.
By bridging the gap between development and commercialization, the initiative seeks to de-risk innovations that address the urgent global need for heavy industry decarbonization.
Successful applicants will contribute to Canada’s role as the world’s fifth-largest natural gas producer while advancing solutions for a sustainable energy future.
Funding and benefits
Selected innovators are eligible to receive up to $500,000 CAD in non-dilutive funding, covering up to 50% of qualifying project costs.
This capital serves as a critical boost for startups and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) looking to scale pre-commercial technologies without giving up ownership or equity.
Beyond the cash, participants gain access to exclusive industry demonstration sites across Canada to test their prototypes in real-world settings.
They also receive direct, adopter-centric feedback from ten leading Canadian energy companies that represent the full natural gas value chain.
Participation provides a unique platform to showcase solutions to energy leaders committed to methane reduction and sustainability goals.
This visibility, combined with mentorship and strategic partnerships, helps startups build the credibility needed to secure market adoption and reach a global audience.
Application requirements and eligibility
The call is open to both Canadian and international innovators, including independent technology development firms and startups.
Eligible SMEs must employ fewer than 500 staff, while startups should have fewer than 100 employees and generate less than $25 million in annual revenue.
While global participation is encouraged, the program is currently not accepting applications from Russia, Iran, or North Korea.
Applicants without a prior presence in Canada must demonstrate a clear strategy for how their proposed project will lead to deploying solutions within the country.
Projects must focus on technologies with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 5 or higher, specifically aiming for levels 7 to 9 to demonstrate a clear path to commercialization.
Late-stage TRL 5 projects may be considered if their progression to TRL 6 is imminent.
The competition focuses on several key areas, including carbon capture (CCUS), renewable natural gas (RNG), and energy efficiency.
Other priority topics include waste heat utilization, natural gas heat pumps for residential use, and water management solutions.
Deadline
Technology developers must submit their complete applications through the NGIF portal no later than February 17, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
The rigorous selection process involves a stage-gated assessment to identify technologies that best meet the needs of current industry operators.
Following the submission deadline, final funding decisions are expected to be announced in July 2026.
Interested parties are encouraged to review the intake guidelines and challenge statements provided by NGIF to ensure their solutions align with the sector’s most pressing needs,.
