The Al Jazeera Fellowship Programme has opened applications for its 2025 edition, inviting journalists and media researchers from around the world to take part in a research-based learning experience within the Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN).

The programme combines practical newsroom exposure with academic inquiry, helping participants explore the fast-changing landscape of journalism while engaging directly with Al Jazeera’s professional culture.

Focus

The fellowship focuses on strengthening journalism in the Global South and supporting professionals adapting to new media technologies.

It aims to promote innovation, ethical reporting, and original research on pressing issues facing the media industry.

Fellows may explore themes such as digital journalism, media ethics, journalism education, AI in newsrooms, fact-checking, independent media challenges and the impact of globalisation on storytelling.

Programme design

The fellowship runs for three months, divided into two phases.

In the first phase, fellows work remotely to prepare a research plan and draft the introduction to their paper.

The second phase takes place at Al Jazeera’s headquarters, where participants continue their research while gaining first-hand experience in newsroom operations.

Each fellow is expected to complete a 7,000-word research paper by the end of the programme.

What’s on offer?

Selected fellows will receive full institutional support during their stay, including access to Al Jazeera’s newsroom, editorial teams and research resources.

They will engage with journalists, editors and producers, gaining insights into the network’s journalistic standards and workflows.

Beyond research, the fellowship offers an opportunity to expand professional networks and develop ideas that can shape the future of journalism.

● Have a minimum of four years of full-time experience in journalism or media-related research
● Possess strong research, analytical and writing skills
