Applications are now open for education researchers seeking grants of up to $15,000 to advance critical work in Foundational Learning (FL) across Africa.

This initiative aims to strengthen research focused on improving early literacy and numeracy, generating evidence that can meaningfully shape educational policy and practice across the region.

Funding

The grants provide up to $15,000 to cover direct research costs, including researcher time, materials, data collection and dissemination efforts.

This opportunity is part of a collaboration between Education Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA) and the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre at the University of Cambridge.

Through this partnership, the programme seeks to build the capacity of local researchers to generate actionable insights that improve educational outcomes and influence policy across participating countries.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, or Zambia.

  • Be currently based in their respective country.

  • Hold a PhD as the lead applicant.

  • Be affiliated with a university, research institution, or government department within their country.

Application requirements

Applicants must ensure their proposed research aligns with priority areas specified in their country’s individual call. Depending on the country, submissions must be prepared and submitted in English or French.
