Applications are now open for the 2026 Film and TV Funding Award, a major global opportunity supporting emerging documentary talent.

This annual prize recognises a filmmaker with the most compelling director-led pitch, offering substantial funding to help transform bold ideas into powerful, long-form storytelling. The award celebrates originality, unique access and strong narrative vision.

Focus

The programme seeks documentaries shaped by the filmmaker’s own voice, with a clear emphasis on personal access, independence, and natural, character-driven storytelling.

Projects must demonstrate curiosity, creative risk-taking, and thoughtful use of technology. They should remain non-partisan, allowing audiences to explore themes without a predetermined viewpoint.

Funding details

The top award provides $120,000 to complete a feature-length documentary, while a runner-up receives $25,000 for project development.

Shortlisted filmmakers will travel to the UK for a live pitch at Sheffield DocFest, with travel and accommodation covered by The Whickers.

Finalists will also gain global visibility, industry connections and mentorship through the pitching process.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants must:

● Be emerging filmmakers of any nationality creating their first 50+ minute documentary as director or co-director.
● Have projects in late development or early production.
● Create films suitable for English-speaking audiences (in English or subtitled).
● Have documentary budgets below $500,000 (exceptions possible for animation with justification).
● Have no more than $350,000 already secured in funding.

Requirements

Applicants must submit up to six minutes of original teaser footage, proof of an attached executive producer and evidence of a viable company structure.

Since individuals cannot directly receive award funds, shortlisted applicants must show an existing registered company or commit to establishing a limited company or project account.

The application also requires a synopsis, personal background, detailed budget, funding history, production company documents, and confirmation of eligibility.

Programme expectations

Shortlisted filmmakers must be available to attend the UK pitch event in June 2026.

Projects should demonstrate strong character engagement, a director-led vision, and a storytelling approach built on unique access rather than reenactments or heavily scripted elements.

The award prioritises impactful, intimate documentary filmmaking grounded in real human experiences.

Deadline

The deadline for applications is January 30, 2026. Visit The Whickers website to apply.
