Applications are now open for the Global Grants for Gut Health, a funding initiative that supports innovative, investigator-led research focused on the human gut microbiota.
Jointly supported by Yakult and Nature Portfolio, the program seeks to advance scientific understanding of the vital role the gut microbiome plays in human health.
The initiative welcomes proposals for one-year research projects—either laboratory-based investigations or clinical studies—that explore how nutrition influences the human gut microbiome and barrier function.
Studies may focus on identifying specific dietary components (such as fibre, polyphenols, and fatty acids) that either promote or disrupt intestinal barrier homeostasis and contribute to microbial diversity.
Proposals may also investigate the complex interactions between diet, microbiome composition, and barrier function, with a focus on how microbial metabolites influence gut permeability and immune responses.
Funding Information
-
Researchers may apply for up to $100,000 (USD) to cover the Direct Costs of their proposed research project.
-
In addition, up to 10% of the total requested Direct Costs (maximum of $10,000 USD) may be awarded to cover Indirect Costs, as per the grant’s funding terms.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
-
Reside in a country where it is lawful to apply for and receive grant funding;
-
Be employed by a university, research institute, or other not-for-profit organization;
-
Hold a doctoral or medical degree (e.g., PhD, PharmD, MD);
-
Have at least five years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.
Only proposals that aim to advance scientific knowledge of the impact of gut microbiota on human health will be considered.

The Global Grants for Gut Health is offering funding for innovative research focused on the human gut microbiota. Supported by Yakult and Nature Portfolio, this program aims to enhance scientific understanding of the gut microbiome's role in health. It invites proposals for one-year projects, either lab-based or clinical, to examine nutrition's impact on the gut microbiome and barrier function. Research may investigate dietary components and their effects on intestinal homeostasis, microbial diversity, and the interaction between diet and microbial metabolites affecting gut permeability and immunity.
Researchers can apply for up to $100,000 USD to cover Direct Costs and an additional 10% for Indirect Costs, per the grant terms. Eligibility requires applicants to reside in a country where legal to receive grants, be employed by a not-for-profit institution, and hold a relevant doctoral degree with at least five years of postdoctoral research experience. Proposals must advance the understanding of gut microbiota's effect on health to be considered. Applications should be submitted via the provided link by September 9, 2025.
