In a demonstration of its commitment to supporting democracy in Nigeria, the United State Government has announced plans to initiate visa bans on Nigerians that played roles in disrupting the last election.

Antony Blinken, the United State Secretary of State, revealed this in a statement available on the US government website.

Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle,” he said.

Blinken clarified that the visa bans target those individuals and not the Nigerian people or the government as a whole.

According to the statement, these individuals, as per the US Immigration and Nationality Act, will face restrictions on visas to the United States.

“These individuals have been involved in the intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Nigeria’s democratic process,” Blinken explained.
