National Senior Citizens Centre condemn burying alive of 70-year old man in Benue State

The National Senior Citizens Centre or NSCC has condemned a recent incident in  Ihwakar Kumekor Dam in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, where a 70year old man was buried alive. 

In a statement signed by Mr. Omini Oden, the Head Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications of the Centre, the Director General of NSCC, Dr. Emem Omokaro is quoted as describing the act as abominable and the height of human rights violation that must be confronted and the culprits made to face the full weight of the law.

The NSCC commended the Nigeria Police Force for taking swift action in apprehending the suspects and acknowledged the efforts of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters or NAPTIP to bring the culprits to book, adding that it will continue to work in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission, the Legal Aids Council of Nigeria, and NAPTIP to combat elder abuse and violence against older persons and provide access to justice.

Dr. Emem assured older persons and Nigerians that the NSCC will stop at nothing but defend the rights of older persons as well as improve their quality of life and well well-being within its mandate.

“The National Senior Citizens Centre Anti Elder Abuse Community Response Mechanism is working in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission, the Legal Aids Council of Nigeria and NAPTIP to stem abuse and violence against Older Persons and provide access to justice,” he said.

The Centre appealed to the public to utilize the following NAPTIP toll-free lines to report cases of abuse or violence against older persons in Nigeria; 07030000203, 080-CALLNAPTIP, and for MTN 627 and *627#.

The NSCC said some youths in Mbatue Council Ward of Konshisha local Government Area of Benue buried alive a 70year old man, Ihwakar Kumekor Dam alleging he invoked thunder and lightning that killed his son, daughter-in-law and a grand-child.

Youths in the Mbatue Council Ward accused Dam of invoking a storm that caused the deaths of his relatives, leading to the incident.
