Adeyemi Babatunde, a 28-year-old man, has been arrested by the Police in Ogun State for allegedly raping his five-year-old daughter.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, The police spokesperson in the state, said the victim’s mother reported the incident.
Oyeyemi stated, “Our operatives have arrested Adeyemi Babatunde, a 28-year-old, over the alleged rape of his daughter. The victim, whose name is withheld, is five years old.”
According to the police statement released on Thursday, the victim’s mother reported the incident to the Police.
The Police said the mother said, “The victim informed her that her father laid her on the bed and inserted his manhood into her private part when the mother was not at home.” Oyeyemi explained.
The Police said the suspect confessed to the crime and didn’t know what had come over him.
In response to the incident, Olanrewaju Oladimeji, the Commissioner of Police, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the anti-human trafficking and child labour section of the state criminal investigation department or CID.
Oyeyemi added, “The commissioner of police has ordered that the suspect be transferred for further investigation and prosecution.”
A study conducted by the Women’s Rights and Health Project or WRAHP revealed that about 31% of Nigerian girls had experienced some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18, with a significant portion of the perpetrators being family members or close relatives.
