After a 25-year-old lady was kidnapped along the Kogi-Abuja road, her family members found themselves in a frantic struggle to save their daughter’s life. The abductors, who were demanding 10 million naira as ransom, threatened to kill the victim if the family contacted the authorities. The family was left without much hope.
Before long, the abductors reduced the ransom to 5 million naira. But the family could only muster N750,000, after selling their belongings and receiving donations from church members. When the abductors heard about this, they reacted with fury. The captors ordered the distraught family to stay on the call while they took turns raping the victim.
Desperate to save his daughter, the girl’s father reported the case to the police, who also demanded money. A relative connected with a tracker on social media, who traced the kidnappers’ locations across Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna states.
Armed with this information, the father went to the police again, but they declined to pursue the case. Only the army could venture into the kidnappers’ lair, they stated. Helpless and frustrated, the family struggled to raise the ransom as the deadline for payment neared.
An X user operating under a pseudonym soon came to their rescue, helping to galvanise support for the release of the abducted girl. About a week later, the pseudonymous account reported that the girl had regained her freedom after four weeks in captivity.
“She was eventually released and seen at Katagora Niger state today after a ransom of 3 million was paid for her release. A brand new motorbike of 1.1 million was given, food stuffs of over 600,000 was purchased for them. Smoke, codine, tramadol etc, of almost 500,000 for them before they agreed to let her go”, the X user wrote.
Her recovery has become the focal point amid heavy financial strain. With no support from the government or organizations, her treatment at a federal medical centre in Lagos is funded entirely by donations from compassionate Nigerians.
