Aisha Buhari, the First Lady of Nigeria, has said that her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered as the President who placed utmost attention to youth development.
She made this statement at the opening of the special medical outreach under the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers or HIRD organised in commemoration of the Scheme’s 50th anniversary on Tuesday, May 16, in Abuja.
“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered as one which places a premium on youth development. Mr. President is particularly passionate about the NYSC. His support for the Scheme is driven by his belief in one Nigeria and sincere appreciation of the contributions of these young men and women,” she said.
She called on the management of the Scheme as well as corp members not to withdraw from their efforts to promote unity in the country, by providing quality service delivery to the nation irrespective of state or place of service.
The First Lady noted that the introduction of the program had been successful, as such her office appreciated the project by donating “a well-equipped mobile clinic to the Scheme to enhance the success of the corps medical team.”
She said the scheme has made a significant impact, especially among rural dwellers, and has continued to attract laudation from within and outside the country.
Yushau Dogara Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, said the program was born out of the need to solve health challenges affecting poor people in rural areas across the country.
He stated that the medical program is aimed at bringing healthcare services closer to rural communities, particularly those that are not reached easily.
Ahmed also reported that so far, over three million Nigerians had benefited from the initiative.
