Social media takes action for student’s health crisis

A final-year dental student Anuoluwagbemiro Salami is the joyous recipient of overwhelming public support following her diagnosis of lumbar canal stenosis due to a disc herniation. The spinal disorder, which has caused her throbbing pain along with weakness in her left leg, threatened not only her health but also her career.

In a social media post seeking advice, the embattled undergraduate shared her dilemma of choosing between her final exams and a scheduled surgery for protracted back pain. 

Salami’s plea struck a chord with many, who counselled her to prioritise her health while initiating an online campaign to raise the required amount of N4,000,000 for her surgery.

“We’re overjoyed to announce that WE’VE REACHED OUR TARGET of ₦4,000,000! In just a short time, your generosity and kindness have made it possible for Anuoluwagbemiro Salami to receive the surgery she needs. We’re deeply grateful for your support and donations,” wrote a close friend of Salami’s.

Struck by the outpouring of support within a short span, Salami thanked the donors in a fairly long post. “Your contributions have helped me raise the funds I needed for my surgery, giving me a new hope of becoming a dentist.”

Contrary to popular negative portrayals, social media has offered a lifeline in recent times to people in need, lending them a hand in difficult times and giving them another chance at life.
