Amid the rising cost of food in Nigeria, a viral act of kindness has offered a glimmer of hope to many Nigerians burdened by inflation. Suleiman Mustapha Adam, better known online as Sircaptain, leverages on his social network to pool resources and provide meals for the needy.

“As you all can see, this is N200,000, and I will use it to feed 400 people. How? Come with me and see,” Sircaptain said in a video.

The clip documents his journey through the market, buying rice and other staples and meticulously accounting for the cost of each food item.

Returning home, Sircaptain washed and ground the rice, mixing it with baking powder, sugar, and other ingredients to make Masa, a traditional northern Nigerian dish. Afterwards, he set up a charcoal fire and fried the masa, which he then stuffed into 200 styrofoam packs. Travelling by tricycle, he doled out the food packs to passers-by and students at a Tsangaya school, a traditional Qur’anic learning centre.

In a subsequent video, Sircaptain visited an abattoir to buy a slaughtered ram. He prepared the meat alongside jollof rice, packed it into 200 styrofoam packs, and distributed the food to patients and staff at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano.

Sircaptains’s charitable work is funded by donations from his social-media network. Supporters contribute money to these projects and sometimes request prayers for their deceased loved ones in return.

His action is part of an emerging social trend that sees online influencers solicit donations as little as N500 from their followers in order to support the needy. For many, these donations are a lifeline amid the prevailing cost-of-living crisis in the country.
