The Skillful Minds OMO Initiative has reiterated its obligation to encourage intellectual competition among secondary school students.
Oluwadamilola Mercy, founder of Skillful Minds Initiative, stated this declaration at the third edition of the Breaking Forth into Excellence annual event held in Abuja. Participants, who were drawn from both public and private secondary schools, delivered spoken words and poetry related to the theme ‘Breaking forth Into Excellence.’
The inter-school literary competition, which was first held in Ekiti, has grown over the years to draw participation from secondary schools across Nigeria’s capital city.
The one-day talent showcase saw the participation of students of literature in Abuja, along with their teachers.
After a thorough evaluation, Ascend Royal Academy came on top of the competition, while Government Secondary School in Kubwa followed closely.
The two keynote speakers delivered extensive speeches on academics and skills.
“This addressed issues of the literary education gap as it promoted spoken word, which is a dynamic form of expression that engages young minds and fosters a love for language and communication. With the participation of the teenagers, I believe there was a spark of interest and curiosity to learn more,” Daniel said.
He added, “More events like this in Nigeria are crucial to inspire and encourage a culture of reading and literary appreciation among young people.”
Meanwhile, Mercy, another keynote speaker, said the competition was aimed at nurturing young talented high schoolers “in poetry, spoken words, drama, and other literature genres. We believe this will build their confidence level and prepare them for bigger stages and opportunities in life.”
Speaking further, she urged the students to imbibe reading as a daily practice in order to achieve excellence
