A police inspector in Rivers State, Nigeria, Nelson Abuante, has shot himself after he shot his colleague, Monday Gbaramana, during an argument.
The incident happened on Sunday at Nyogor-Lueku, Khana Local Government Area of the state, when both officers attached to Taabaa Division of the Command went to arrest a suspect in the community following a complaint by the suspect’s mother.
According to Channels Television, trouble started when a suspect identified as Akere Akpobari resisted attempts to be arrested. In the ensuing melee, Inspector Abuante accidentally fired at Inspector Gbaramana.
Gbaramana was immediately rushed to the hospital. But things took a worse turn as the vehicle conveying Gbaramana’s body ran out of petrol, leading to his death.
In the wake of this incident, Abuante turned the gun to his head, shooting himself.
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying: “Both bodies have been deposited at the mortuary while investigations are ongoing.”
In another development, no fewer than 22 people have been abducted in the Pupule Community of Yorro Local Government Area in Taraba State.
Heavily armed gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, invaded the village at about 2 on Tuesday morning. The men took the people hostage, including a pregnant woman, shooting sporadically.
The police in the state at press time are yet to confirm the abduction. Meanwhile, residents say they are now living in fear, even as many have begun to flee.
