As jungle justice continue to greet various part of Nigeria, especially in the South-South region of the country, a man in his middle age has been lynched by angry mobs.
The victim suspected to be a criminal was killed by the mobs at Ikot Ansa Bus stop, in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident took place late Sunday night towards the wee hours of Monday within the Asimi Ita community where the middle-aged man was caught allegedly breaking into an apartment through the roof of a building.
An eyewitness who wouldn’t be mentioned alleged that the suspect has been disturbing the peace of the area, snatching phones and engaging in other forms of vices, especially during rainy hours.
All efforts made to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo proved abortive as she kept busing the calls placed to her.
Cases of jungle justice have been on the increase in the past three years and a few of those were Mrs Iquo Edet Eyo and four others who were October 2022 tied, tortured, killed, and buried in the forest in Odukpani LGA of the State for alleged witchcraft.
A man in his late 20s identified as Eyo was in April 2023 set ablaze for allegedly stealing a phone at Edim Otop by Stream Road, Calabar Municipal Local Government Area.
Similarly, three suspected armed robbers were on Saturday, April 2022 30 killed, and set ablaze in Calabar South and Municipality of the State.
Two were burnt to death at Mayne Avenue by Azikiwe Street, opposite Hart Street, Calabar South Local Government Area. Luck ran out on the suspect while robbing a residential apartment in the area.
Journeying three years back, another suspected robber was mobbed early Thursday morning at Ikot Ansa bus stop by Foursquare Gospel Church, Murtala Mohammed Highway Calabar.
According to an eyewitness, “the suspect was caught early in the morning by an angry mob while trying to carry out an illegal operation.”
The reason for the increase is unclear but perpetrators say they resort to mob actions because whenever suspects are arrested and handed over to the police, they are released in a few days without facing the law.
