Musician Naira Marley detained over MohBad’s death
The Nigerian Police Force, Lagos State Command, has yielded to public pressure to arrest and detain singer and songwriter Azeez Adeshina Fashola, better known by his stage name Naira Marley, in connection with the death of Afrobeats star MohBad.
The detention was disclosed by the Lagos State Police Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who said that Marley was being held for interrogation and other investigation activities.
Naira Marley has several times denied having a hand in Mohbad’s death, with videos and text shared on various social media platforms.
Recently, Marley shared on X that he was assisting authorities with the investigation into MohBad’s death and would meet with the police with hopes for the truth to be uncovered and for justice to prevail.
The fast-rising music star, MohBad, died mysteriously at a Lagos hospital on September 12 and was hurriedly buried by his family. His death has triggered protests and calls for investigations from his fans, which led to police exhuming his body for an autopsy.
Fans particularly directed their anger towards Marley, who had signed MohBad under his Marlian Records music label. MohBad left the label last year after falling out with Marley.
Following his death, several videos of MohBad’s complaining about his relationship with Marlian records resurfaced.
Dozens of Kenyan schoolgirls hit by unknown illness
Students of Eregi Girls High School in the western part of Kenya have been hit by an unknown illness. Report has it that the girls had difficulties walking and symptoms of knee pain.
A senior Ministry of Education official who visited the school on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, told worried parents that the situation was under control. The official said classes would continue as normal for other pupils.
“The education department, the county government and public health department are giving a commitment that the children will be treated,” said Jared Obiero, the regional director of education.
The BBC understands that blood, urine and stool samples from the ill students were sent to laboratories in Kisumu, a neighbouring city, and the capital, Nairobi. Conclusive results to determine the cause of the illness are expected later on today Wednesday.
Boat with 280 African migrants land in Spain
A small sized boat loaded with about 280 migrants believed to hail from Africa has landed in Canary Islands, Spain. The vessel arrived on the remote island of El Hierro, some 380 km (238 miles) off Africa’s western coast, on Tuesday 4th October, 202.
Rescue workers said those onboard were of sub-Saharan African origin and it was the largest number of migrants ever to arrive in the archipelago in one go. The crossing to the Canary Islands is one of the most commonly used and dangerous routes to Europe for migrants from Africa.
“I’ve never seen a boat with so many people on board,” journalist and former migration adviser, Txema Santana said on social media after the vessel arrived. Since the start of the year, 140 people have died or disappeared trying to make the crossing, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Use of the route has increased in recent years as tighter controls have been put in place to stop people crossing the Mediterranean from Africa’s northern coast.
In a data sighted by BBC News, Between 1 January and 30 September this year, a total of 14,976 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, an increase of 19.8% on the same period in 2022, according to figures from Spain’s interior ministry.
On Sunday, Senegal’s Navy said it hadintercepted four boats over three days with more than 600 people on board. In August, at least 60 people are believed to have died on a boat that was eventually found off Cape Verde, an African island nation that sits on the migration route to the Canaries.
Tunisia: Opposition leader Abir Moussi arrested
The leader of Tunisia’s major opposition parties Parti Destourien Libre, Abir Moussi has been arrested. Moussi was said to have been arrested outside the presidential palace in Carthage where she had come to lodge appeals against presidential decrees.
In a video post on PDL’s Facebook page, the opposition leader said that the office of the President had refused to accept her appeal and to give her an acknowledgment of receipt.
Naoufel Bouden, PDL’s lawyer, said the reasons for Moussi’s arrest remain unknown, African News learned.
“More details are expected this evening or tomorrow,” he said.
Party members denounced the arrest as a “kidnapping” in statements to the Tunisian media.
