A suspected phone thief was today, 9th April 2023, lynched by an angry mob in the Edim-Otop axis of Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The alleged thief, identified simply as ‘Eyo’, is said to be a notorious petty thief around the Anyaghasang and Atimbo area of the state capital and had stolen a phone when luck ran out on him.

An eyewitness who did not want to be named said Eyo had snatched a phone and other belongings from his victim and took to his heels but was chased by youths around the area who have had enough of his criminality.

“The boys chasing him caught him around the culvert area and started hitting him with sticks and stones and later set him ablaze by the crowd,” the eyewitness said.

Irene Ugbo, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident but warned against jungle justice, saying the incident should have been reported at a police station.
