The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control or NAFDAC, has raised an alarm over the sale of Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ in Nigeria.
The product was recalled in Malaysia and Taiwan for containing a harmful compound called ethylene oxide, which can cause cancer.
In a statement signed by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, The Director General of the Agency, NAFDAC said it is now conducting random sampling and analysis of Indomie noodles and other instant noodle brands to check for the presence of ethylene oxide, and assured Nigerians that the agency will conduct thorough investigations at the factory and market levels and keep them informed of its findings.
The agency emphasized that Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ is not registered by NAFDAC for sale in Nigeria. Noodles are on the Import Prohibition List of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and importing them is illegal.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to be cautious and report any suspicious noodle products that may pose a health risk, as the agency is committed to safeguarding the health of Nigerians and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of food products in the country.
