The Global AgriInno Challenge (GAC) 2026 has officially launched an international search for startups and researchers ready to transform agrifood systems in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
This year’s competition seeks digital solutions tailored to the unique climate and geographic pressures facing island communities.
Co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Zhejiang University, and Pinduoduo, the GAC is a premier platform for youth-led innovation.
By focusing on SIDS, the program aims to address regions often overlooked by global technology investors despite their high vulnerability to food insecurity.
Participants must tackle one of four critical pillars: improving agricultural production, enhancing nutrition, protecting vulnerable environments, or boosting rural quality of life.
All submissions should prioritize sustainable outcomes that are responsive to the realities of island life.
Funding and benefits
Selected finalists will gain access to intensive coaching and “Innovation for Good” workshops leading up to a Global Final Pitch event in Hangzhou, China, this August.
Exceptional teams will also have the opportunity to showcase their work at the prestigious FAO Science and Innovation Forum in Rome this October.
Winners may receive seed funding to scale their innovations, subject to compliance with specific organizational conditions.
Beyond immediate rewards, participants join a global alumni network designed to foster long-term professional connections with international experts and investors.
Application requirements and eligibility
The challenge is open to registered legal entities with less than five years of operation and an annual turnover under $1 million.
Crucially, teams must be led by at least one individual under the age of 35, reflecting the program’s commitment to empowering the next generation of agripreneurs.
Applicants must present technology-based solutions that are at a post-MVP stage, specifically Technology Readiness Level 7-9.
While teams from around the world are eligible, preference will be given to those originating from or led by individuals from SID.
Deadline
Interested innovators must submit their solutions by june 20, 2026, at 24:00 CEST.
The top 13 finalists will be announced shortly after on July 2 during the Smart Farming Conference.
