Khoj Studios is now accepting applications for its 2026 International Residency, a program dedicated to exploring the intersection of experimental art and mental health.

The six-week onsite program, based in New Delhi, seeks to incubate creative practices that challenge traditional boundaries and investigate how pain shapes the self and society.

This edition focuses on how physical, psychological, or historical distress impacts both individuals and the collective social fabric.

Artists are invited to critically examine how suffering is unequally distributed across race, caste, class, gender, and geography, especially in the face of systemic inequalities.

The residency moves beyond medical definitions of mental illness, encouraging explorations of clinical experiences alongside everyday rituals, myths, and oral histories.

It specifically highlights how digital cultures and new technologies are reshaping contemporary ideas of anxiety, coping, and memory.

Organized in collaboration with the Center for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action (CAMHRA) at SOAS, the program brings together artists and scholars from India and the UK.

This partnership aims to explore the varied forms of vitality and distress that define modern life-worlds.

Application requirements and eligibility

Applications are open to both Indian and international artists who work in any medium.

The program is specifically looking for practitioners whose work expands the discourse on mental health and reimagines the self through its vulnerabilities and wounds.

While the call is global, one slot is specifically designated for a UK artist who will be supported by CAMHRA.

Interested candidates should note that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted via email after the review process is complete.

Funding and benefits

Selected residents will be provided with comprehensive financial and logistical support during their six-week stay at Khoj Studios in New Delhi.

This includes travel to and from Delhi, a per-diem for living expenses, and a dedicated production budget for their creative projects.

Deadline

The residency is scheduled to run from August 3, 2026, to September 16, 2026.

To be considered for this opportunity, interested artists must submit their applications by the deadline of June 7, 2026.
