Gilead has officially launched its call for applications for the Global Public Health Research Scholars Program, targeting the next generation of scientific leaders.

This initiative seeks to empower early-career investigators in low and middle-income countries to tackle the pressing challenges of HIV and viral hepatitis (B, C, and D).

By focusing on country-driven research priorities, the program aims to help nations meet their sustainable development goals for populations most at risk.

The awards are specifically designed to foster independent research and professional growth for public health specialists in the early stages of their careers.

Funding and benefits

The program will provide four individual awards, each valued at $100,000, to support impactful public health studies.

These grants are intended to fund research projects that can be successfully completed within a two-year timeframe.

Selected scholars must commit approximately 50% of their professional time to their research, ensuring a primary focus on scientific discovery rather than administrative or teaching duties.

Successful projects must culminate in tangible outcomes, such as manuscripts or abstracts, to pave the way for future research.

Application requirements and eligibility

Eligible candidates include junior faculty, public health researchers, and post-doctoral students who hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree.

Applicants must be in the early stages of their careers, with no more than 10 years elapsed since receiving their terminal degree.

Candidates must be based in Africa, South Asia, or Southeast Asia and hold a position at an academic research institution or public health organization.

Furthermore, applicants must secure an in-country mentor with significant expertise in HIV, viral hepatitis, or implementation science.

Proposals must not involve interventional clinical trials or the investigation of specific Gilead products.

Additionally, the research must not receive duplicative funding from other sources, although the award may be used to support a specific component of a larger project.

Deadline

Interested researchers must submit their complete applications before the strictly enforced cutoff of 11:59 PM CEST on August 28, 2026.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to review the program’s scientific focus and institutional requirements well in advance of the submission date.
