The University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, in collaboration with Moi University and the University of Cape Town, has launched its call for the 2026/27 Women in Global Health Leadership Fellowship. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, this year-long program addresses a stark imbalance: while women make up 70% of the global health workforce, they hold only 25% of leadership roles.
The initiative provides a “safe space” for mid-career professionals to engage with gender-transformative leadership tools and role models.
Through a mix of online learning and in-person workshops, the curriculum covers vital competencies such as global health policy, advocacy, and intersectional analysis.
Funding and benefits
Participants in this hybrid program will receive comprehensive financial assistance, including a living and family support stipend.
This funding is specifically designed to cover lost wages, elder care, or childcare, ensuring that domestic responsibilities do not hinder a fellow’s ability to participate.
A major highlight of the program is an intensive, fully funded one-week leadership academy in Kenya scheduled for early 2027.
The fellowship covers all costs for this session, including transportation, meals, and accommodation, while also providing fellows with personalized mentorship from senior global health experts.
Application requirements and eligibility
The fellowship is strictly open to African nationals who currently reside and work in either Kenya or South Africa.
Applicants must identify as women and be early-to-mid career professionals with 5 to 15 years of experience in public health practice, research, or teaching.
Educational requirements include a post-graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in Public Health, Health Sciences, or a related field.
Candidates must be fluent in English, demonstrate clear leadership qualities, and have the formal support of their employer to complete the 12-month commitment.
Deadline
The selection process begins with a mandatory Expression of Interest (EOI), which must be submitted via an online form.
The deadline to complete this initial 20-minute registration is May 22, 2026.
Following the EOI phase, a select group of candidates will be invited to submit a full application by late June or early July 2026.
Only 18 fellows will be chosen for the final 2026/27 cohort, with the year-long journey involving the development and presentation of an original leadership project.
