The following is a call for applications regarding the upcoming management course for heritage sites with multiple international labels.
Global heritage organizers are seeking professionals to join an intensive training program titled “Managing Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs) effectively: Strengthening the management system of heritage places with multiple international designations”.
The course is a collaborative effort between the Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Area (GCIDA), ICCROM, and IUCN through the World Heritage Leadership Programme.
Participants will focus on moving beyond fragmented management to create coordinated systems for sites that hold multiple titles, such as World Heritage properties that also serve as Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Global Geoparks, or Ramsar Sites.
The curriculum emphasizes a “heritage place approach,” which aims to balance the conservation of multiple heritage values within their broader social, environmental, and economic contexts.
The program utilizes the island of Jeju, a site inscribed under all UNESCO and Ramsar designations, as a primary case study to explore how diverse governance arrangements ensure long-term protection.
Additionally, site managers will be trained to use the Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0 to conduct management effectiveness assessments and identify areas for system improvement.
Funding and benefits
Successful candidates will benefit from a program that removes financial barriers to high-level professional training.
Selected participants are not required to pay a course fee, and the organizers will provide all necessary accommodation, meals, and local transportation for the duration of the course.
Furthermore, limited travel scholarships are available specifically for participants coming from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
These scholarships are designed to cover the essential costs of round-trip airfare and the fees associated with obtaining a visa.
Application requirements and eligibility
This opportunity is specifically designed for approximately 20 participants representing the Republic of Korea, Asia and the Pacific, and Africa.
To be eligible, candidates must represent heritage places that are currently designated under two or more international frameworks, such as Ramsar Sites or UNESCO Global Geoparks.
Applicants are required to submit an online form including a portrait photo, a curriculum vitae, and an official endorsement letter.
Candidates must also provide a 500-word personal statement detailing their role in site management and how they implement people-centered approaches in their current professional work.
Deadline
All interested candidates must finalize their submissions through the official online application portal to be considered for the program.
The deadline for all application materials is 29 May 2026.
