The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) and the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) have announced a global call for the Interstellar Initiative.

This program targets Early Career Investigators (ECIs) to solve the complex biological puzzles of living organisms.

The initiative creates an international stage where scientists from different disciplines collaborate on innovative research proposals.

Participants work in interdisciplinary teams to push the boundaries of basic scientific understanding under the guidance of world-leading mentors.

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants are eligible to receive research funding of up to 1.92 million JPY.

This support is specifically designed to advance proposals that focus on the fundamental mechanisms of life.

Beyond financial aid, the program offers participants the chance to have their research proposals “stress-tested” and refined by senior scientists. Alumni describe the experience as a career-altering opportunity that significantly expands global professional networks.

Application requirements and eligibility

To be considered, applicants must hold a tenure-track or equivalent faculty position.

Alternatively, those who have secured a research grant to lead projects for at least two years are also eligible to apply.

The search is restricted to investigators who received their doctoral degree no earlier than May 2016.

Additionally, candidates should have no more than 10 years of active research experience following their degree.

Candidates must be proficient in English for professional communication and work within fields such as life sciences, biotechnology, or physical sciences.

The initiative seeks researchers ready to engage in rigorous international dialogue and collaborative brainstorming.

Deadline

The selection process is highly competitive, as only 24 applicants will be chosen for the upcoming cohort.

Interested investigators are urged to begin their applications immediately via the official portal to secure their chance at this international collaboration.
