Defeat Duchenne Canada is once again opening its doors to the world’s leading scientists as it kicks off its 2027 Research Grant Cycle.

This long-standing organization is searching for innovative projects that promise to bring life-changing treatments and a potential cure closer to clinical reality.

Funding and benefits

Since its inception in 1995, the foundation has funneled more than $20.3 million into the global search for a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Successful researchers join a prestigious roster of investigators backed by a community dedicated to ending this disease.

While specific 2027 totals are finalized later, the 2026 cycle alone saw over $1 million invested in high-impact research.

Beyond financial support, grant recipients gain access to a collaborative network of experts and the invaluable perspectives of the Duchenne family community.

Application requirements and eligibility

The foundation is prioritizing proposals that demonstrate both high scientific merit and a “clear, probable, and timely path” toward helping patients in a clinical setting.

Projects must prove they are cost-effective and capable of making a significant impact on those living with the condition.

Cooperation is a cornerstone of this initiative; the organization highly encourages research groups to be open to collaborating with other investigators.

This collaborative spirit extends to exploring additional partnerships with other foundations to maximize the reach of every discovery.

The selection process is uniquely rigorous, involving dual reviews by the Research Funding Advisory Committee (RFAC) and the Duchenne Family Advisory Committee (DFAC).

This ensures that funded projects are both scientifically sound and deeply relevant to the needs of the families actually living with Duchenne.

Deadline

Scientists ready to make their mark can begin the two-stage application process by submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) starting March 31, 2026.

Only a subset of those who pass this initial rigorous review will be invited to submit full applications for further expert scrutiny.

All initial LOI submissions must be completed through the foundation’s portal before the Tuesday, April 28, 2026, deadline.

Interested parties are encouraged to reach out to the National Director of Research and Education for further details.
