African Liberty, an independent platform powered by African Students For Liberty, has officially opened applications for its prestigious 2026/2027 Writing Fellowship.
This initiative seeks to identify and train talented writers who are passionate about exploring African perspectives and ideas.
The journey begins with a rigorous five-week online training program set to run from May 25, 2026, to June 22, 2026.
Only a select group of participants from this initial training phase will be invited to join the official one-year fellowship.
Prospective applicants should be prepared for a highly competitive selection process.
In the previous cycle, the program received approximately 1,900 applications, yet only 33 fellows were ultimately inducted after the training period.
Funding and benefits
Successful candidates will participate in a paid fellowship, with compensation structures based on a monthly assessment of their output.
It is important to note that financial benefits only commence once a participant has been formally inducted as a fellow following the training period.
Beyond financial incentives, the program offers a global platform for fellows’ work, which has historically been featured in numerous major media outlets.
This provides young writers with significant professional exposure and the opportunity to influence public discourse.
Application requirements and eligibility
To be eligible, an applicant must be currently enrolled in or a graduate of an African institution of higher learning.
The fellowship also welcomes applications from Africans who are pursuing their higher education at institutions outside the continent.
The entire program, from the initial five-week training to the final day of the fellowship, is conducted entirely online.
Furthermore, there are no application or admission fees required to participate in any stage of the process.
Deadline
The window for applications is currently open, but candidates must act quickly as the deadline is April 30, 2026.
Interested individuals can direct specific questions to Editor-in-Chief Ibrahim Anoba as they prepare their submissions for the upcoming cycle.
