The International Press Institute (IPI) has officially launched its Global AI Accelerator for Media to help independent newsrooms navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
This specialized initiative supports small and mid-sized outlets from Global Majority countries as they integrate artificial intelligence into their business and editorial workflows.
In its fifth year of innovation programming, IPI aims to protect the long-term viability of journalism independent of outside influence.
The AI Accelerator addresses urgent market pressures, including audience fragmentation and disruptions in monetization caused by changing consumer behavior.
Over an eight-month period, 15 selected newsrooms will work on medium-term AI adoption and long-term strategic planning.
Participants will co-create an AI adoption roadmap focusing on security, credibility, and emerging business opportunities.
Funding and benefits
Grantees will receive up to $14,000 to implement their projects, with 60% of the funds disbursed upon signing the grant agreement.
These funds can cover nearly any operational cost, including research and travel, though hardware costs are strictly excluded.
Beyond financial aid, the program offers intensive expert-led training in digital business models, product management, and AI literacy.
Participants gain one-on-one advisory services and access to an exclusive e-learning platform featuring modules from industry leaders.
Fellows also join IPI’s global innovation network, connecting with peer newsrooms, computer science experts, and technology partners.
This community fosters collaborative problem-solving and long-lasting partnerships among media outlets navigating similar digital challenges.
Application requirements and eligibility
The call is open to independent news organizations based in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Eligible outlets must have between 3 and 50 staff members and have been fully operational for at least three years.
Applicants must already be investigating or experimenting with AI technologies and maintain a verifiable online presence.
They must present a specific organizational “pain-point” or challenge, supported by user research, that AI has the potential to solve.
Selection depends on a newsroom’s commitment to building a critical culture around AI and maintaining transparent collaboration with the cohort.
An international jury will conduct pre-screenings and online interviews to select the final 15 participating projects.
Deadline
Interested media organizations must submit their applications in English via the official Jotform platform.
The submission window remains open until the final cutoff on February 4, 2026, at 23:59 CEST.
